Federal Party Names

the Canadian federal political parties have nicknames...]
"BQ" stands for the Bloc Quebecois, not Beggar Quickly. Members are known as
Bloquistes, not "blockheads" or "blockbusters."
"CA" stands for a member of the Canadian Alliance Party. The new party was
dubbed the Canadian Misalliance Party by columnist Mordecau Richler.
"CCF" stands for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, not Canadian Cow
Farmers, Cancel Canada's Freedom, or Come Comrades Forward.
"Grit" means a member of the Liberal part of Canada. Journalist Blair Fraser
referred to Diefenbaker's landslide victory in 1956 as a "Gritterdammerung" (or
"Twilight of the Grits").
"NDP" stands for the New Democratic Party, not No Dreams of Prosperity or Never
Dies Politically.
"PQ" stands for the Parti Quebecois, not Pack Quickly or Panic in Quebec.
Members are known as Pequistes, not "pique-ists."
"Tory" means a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. The party
is neither no-Torious nor Satisfac-Tory, regardless of one's political allegiance
