Abby’s Wild Eyes Teen’s round-the-world setback while living her dream
Sailor Abby Sunderland, 16, was rescued by the Australia Maritime Safety Authority from
the Indian Ocean after her yacht, Wild Eyes, was damaged by 30-foot waves, prompting her
to set off a distress signal. Abby was attempting to become the youngest person to sail
around the world alone without stopping. Her brother briefly held the record in 2009.
On May 15, 2010, Australian 16-year-old Jessica Watson claimed the record after
completing a 23,000-mile (37,000-kilometer) circumnavigation in 210 days.
