Sandy McDonald had the reputation of being the biggest skinflint in Edinburgh. When his son started courting Bonnie, Sandy was concerned about the cost. One night his son found Sandy waiting up for him.

Said his son, “Can’t you sleep, father?”

“No son, I can’t,” said Sandy. “I keep thinking about how you’re out spending money on such foolishness.”

Replied the son, “Why father, you shouldn’t worry. We spent only a dollar tonight.”

Even Sandy had to admit that wasn’t too much.

“That’s all she had,” said the son.
