Olympic Flag
The Olympic flag, consisting of the five Olympic rings on a white background,
first appeared in 1914. However, it did not make its Olympic debut until the
1920 Olympics at Antwerp, Belgium. It was conceived and designed by French
educator and key player for the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, Pierre
baron de Coubertin. De Coubertin was a founding member of the International
Olympic Committee and served as its president from 1896-1925. The five equal
interlocked rings of blue, yellow, black, green, and red on a white background
in the Olympic flag represent, according to de Coubertin, “the five parts of
the world won over to Olympism and willing to accept healthy competition.”
The six colours that make up the flag include the colours found in the flags
of all nations in existence at the time the Olympic flag was created.
The colours of the rings are not associated with specific continents.
