Cattle are considered sacred in various world religions, most notably Hinduism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism as well as the religions of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome. The cow was possibly revered because Hindus relied heavily on it for dairy products, for tilling fields, and on cow dung as a source of fuel and fertilizer. In some regions, especially some states in India, the slaughter of cattle is prohibited and their meat may be taboo.
