The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a highly competitive annual spelling bee in the United States.
It’s open to winners of sponsored American regional spelling bees,
and also open to other country’s contestants (who must also be
regional spelling-bee winners).
Run on a not-for-profit basis by the E. W. Scripps Company,
it’s held the week following the U.S. Memorial Day weekend.
The 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held from
June 1-2, 2011 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center
in Maryland (near Washington, D.C.)
